Thunderer-class Battleship by Zibblsnrt Thunderer-class Battleship by Zibblsnrt
Almost enough dakka. Or not.

This one is one of the largest designs planned for the project as a whole, with the possible exceptions of stations and one monster ship I'm in the back-of-the-envelope stage of designing. There's not much to say about the specifics of the design - it's a battleship, meaning it's big, relatively uncommon, ludicrously overpriced and meant to easily blow up things that aren't other battleships. Herds of smaller ships would be a problem too, which is why these would generally travel with a posse or two of escorts; they're as much strategic and prestige vessels as a contemporary carrier is.

I've obviously started doing the turret meshes with this one as well; this is probably the most ridiculous of the planned ships in terms of ow-per-hull-surface ratio. Most of the subsequent designs are going to be quite a bit smaller: the rest of the escort ships and carriers, as well as the remaining fighter and bomber designs before I start dropping examples of the other fleets in.

For scale, we've got a Charybdis-class cruiser in the background, and a Kestrel flying alongside the foreground ship. I haven't been bored enough to work out the exact sizes yet, but that places the Thunderer at about six hundred metres in length.

As part of the texture, ~svenniemannie strikes again as always with his still-excellent base hull plating pattern which can be found here: [link]

Very nice design, looks beefy and armed to the teeth.

What kind of game are you working on?

Thanks!

The basic idea is a combination shooter and RTS/fleet management sim; 2D plane with free camera control (for eyecandy purposes) and lowpoly-enough ships to be able to run some decently large battles instead of "you've got 15 units and I've got 15 units" things.

A friend of mine's been doing the code, I've been doing the graphics and some of the other gameplay design stuff. It's been fun so far; we each went in with different areas we wanted to practice (graphics and network coding for the coder, graphics - duh - and AI design for me) and it hums along for a few weeks every now and then.

The last couple of months we've both been getting back into it a bit at a time as we each adjust to new day jobs and become able to think in complete sentences again. I'll probably start dropping some in-engine shots here eventually.

Of course.

If you're just going to keep insisting that Star Wars is the one true standard - which it never has been - that must be followed, then I'm not the least bit interested in keeping up the argument.

Star Wars has it like that.

Meh, Star Wars isn't the authority for how big a type of ship ought to be (mostly because there is no such authority). I have my inspirations that I started working from at first, but they're definitely different ones.

I try to scale my stuff so it makes sense and is consistent, and most of these are still very large in the first place. Remember, the largest battleships ever built are still well under 300 metres.
